Starting Social Argentine Tango

Argentine Tango is a unique dance and has something that everyone can connect with. At its heart Tango is a walking dance, so if you can walk then you can dance Tango.

There is no single reason why people decide to learn Argentine Tango. Some find Tango through the music. Some because of the passion and sensuality. Some after they've seen it in films or on television. Some come to Tango for the community and the social interaction. Some because it is a challenge and they want to understand how it works. Some only because they were persuaded by their other half and end up finding it has changed their lives.

However you find Argentine Tango, Tango Cheshire is here to support you on your journey.

How can I start learning Argentine Tango?

Tango Cheshire runs a Basic Technique course for Argentine Tango complete novices and those with experience looking to improve their technique or to explore dancing in the opposite role. This course runs three times a year.

If you can't make the first class in the course then you can still start the course as a complete beginner up to the third week of the course.

If you don't want to wait for the next course to start, have a think about private lessons. With just a few private lessons you could quickly catch up and join the course that is already running or start the next course with confidence. Private lessons are a great way to accelerate your Tango learning as the whole session is focused on your individual needs. We can help with private lessons for individuals and for couples.

We can also run intensive Tango Boot Camps where there is sufficient interest (minimum four couples). So, when you have a group of friends who are also interested in learning social Argentine Tango then why not contact us and we can discuss a special weekend course.

Do I need a partner?

No you don't need a partner to attend the Basic Technique course. Usually our numbers in the Basic Technique course balance naturally, so do not be put off if you have no partner.

In our weekly classes we encourage (but do not demand) you to change partners during the lesson. Changing partners helps you meet new people and experience how dancing works with others. Argentine Tango is a social activity so knowing more people through the safe environment of the class is a great way to boost your confidence. Of course, if you come with a partner and want to stay with that person this is absolutely no problem.

What clothes should I wear?

You can wear any clothes that you feel comfortable in and that are not too restrictive.

What shoes should I wear?

For the first few weeks of the Basic Technique course you can wear any comfortable shoes that will stay on your feet. Soon you will want to wear shoes in which you could dance "the twist" as the course introduces the idea of pivoting on the balls of your feet, so check your wardrobe for shoes that might be suitable.

Eventually you will want to invest in a pair of dance shoes, but you do not need special dance shoes to learn or dance Argentine Tango.

How much does it cost to learn with Tango Cheshire?

Our Thursday evening pricing can be found on our classes page.

If as a complete Tango novice you decide the dance is not for you after your first lesson, pay the evening price. However, if you decide to join us for the rest of the Basic Technique course we will ask you to buy our 10 evening block deal, which gives you a large discount on the pay as you go evening price, and as a first timer we allow you to miss a number of classes and not lose those evening credits.

Once you have taken your first 10 classes you can choose to pay as you go or purchase another discounted block of sessions.

Anything else?

Avoid perfume and aftershave. When dancing and learning Tango you are in each other's space, and what may seem fine to you could be overpowering to another person.

Have fun in the classes! Discovering how Tango works is a personal journey and everybody's journey is different. So, if an idea doesn't land first time it doesn't matter as the idea is guaranteed to come up again. There is no need to be perfect, only to be open to the idea of learning, and we are here to help when you encounter a challenge.

Make use of us! We are there to help, so if you have any questions or want some assistance then ask. We want you to have the best experience and to get the most from your time with us.
